Nursing Interest

Students must meet certain eligibility requirements to be pre-nursing majors. For this reason, students cannot select the pre-nursing major as incoming students, or change their major to pre-nursing themselves. The pre-nursing major must be initiated by the School of Nursing Advising Center.

Students who are interested in majoring in nursing can select the major “PHLT- Nursing Interest” when they apply to UNCG, or as a change of major for current UNCG Students. If the student meets the eligibility requirements, the School of Nursing Advising Center will initiate a change of major for the student. More details about the process for specific groups of student follows:

Incoming freshmen must have either: 1) an SAT Critical Reading score of at least 500 and an SAT Mathematics score of at least 500 or 2) an ACT Composite score of at least 21, to be pre-nursing (PNUR) majors. Incoming freshmen who are interested in majoring in nursing should select “PHLT- Nursing Interest” when they apply to UNCG.

For freshmen starting classes in the fall, the School of Nursing Advising Center will review SAT and ACT tests scores in early May, and change the major to “Pre-Nursing” for those who have achieved the necessary scores.

For freshmen starting classes in January, the School of Nursing Advising Center will review SAT and ACT tests scores in mid-November and change the major to “Pre-Nursing” for those who have achieved the necessary scores.

Note: It is NOT necessary for incoming, new freshmen to complete the “Request for Change of Major to Pre-Nursing Form.” The Advising Center will automatically review your SAT/ACT scores on the dates listed above.

Incoming freshmen who are initially ineligible to be pre-nursing majors may request change of their major to pre-nursing after successful completion of 15 semester hours of coursework at UNCG with a GPA of at least 3.0. See process for “Continuing UNCG Students” below.

Remaining a Pre-Nursing Major

Pre-nursing majors must earn and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher in order to remain a declared pre-nursing major. If a pre-nursing major’s GPA falls below 3.0, the student’s major will be changed to Pre-Health or another major selected by the student.

Advice to Everyone Interested in the Nursing Major

Keep in mind that every year the School receives more applications to the upper division nursing major than can be accepted. Admission is highly competitive, and students need to demonstrate strong academic performance to have a high likelihood of being accepted into the upper division major. Meeting the minimum criteria to declare pre-nursing as one’s major does not guarantee admission to the upper division nursing major. Students who find meeting the minimum criteria to be challenging are strongly encouraged to meet with their academic advisor to discuss their likelihood of acceptance into the major, and their academic plans in the event they are not admitted into the major.
