Leadership, Education, and Diversity (LEAD) in Maternal Child Health Traineeship

Are you interested in pursuing a career in maternal child health (MCH)? Are you a junior or senior pre-licensure nursing student or are you enrolled in the RN-to-BSN program? The UNCG School of Nursing is offering competitive traineeships to undergraduate students, with priority to those students who self-identify as culturally diverse, underserved, and/or underrepresented backgrounds who have interest in pursuing a career and/or graduate education in MCH-related fields.

Qualifications:

Current junior or senior pre-licensure nursing student at UNCG OR currently enrolled or seeking fall enrollment in the UNCG RN-to-BSN program (hybrid or online cohort). RN to BSN students graduating in December 2023 are not eligible.

The Health Resources and Services Administration’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau (HRSA MCH) defines culturally diverse, underserved, and/or underrepresented backgrounds as those who meet any of the following criteria:

Indigenous peoples of the Americas or Native American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Alaskan Native, Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic, or multiracial.
Cultural diversity (such as English as a second language, LGBTQIA, or non-binary gender identity).
From a medically underserved area, FAFSA score of 1 or more, family income of 200% federal poverty level or below, first-generation college student, graduated from a high school with lower than national average SAT scores (<1011) or graduation rates (<85%), or which had greater than 50% reduced lunch.
Migrant populations, uninsured populations, individuals who have experienced family violence, homelessness, and/or foster care.

Commitment required: All trainees will participate in monthly MCH seminars, shadowing experiences, enhanced nursing coursework, and simulations related to MCH competencies, and commit to periodic check-ins for five years post-traineeship. Trainees should expect to spend an average of 4-6 hours per month involved in MCH traineeship activities.

What we provide: Tuition assistance and stipend for the remainder of your BSN education at UNCG. Enhanced education in MCH and public health competencies, shadowing experiences in MCH careers, as well as individualized mentoring and academic support throughout the traineeship.
