Sigma, also known as Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, is a prestigious honor society in nursing dedicated to advancing global health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. Established in 1922, Sigma has grown to over 135,000 active members in more than 90 countries, making it one of the largest and most influential organizations in the nursing profession. 

Gamma Zeta Chapter

The Gamma Zeta Chapter of Sigma at UNCG, chartered in 1974, has become a cornerstone of the School of Nursing, fostering excellence and leadership in the nursing profession. Our chapter supports the academic and professional development of its members, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation. We take pride in our history of nurturing nursing leaders and promoting high standards in nursing practice, education, and research.  

Becoming a member of Sigma offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Undergraduate Students: Must have completed half of the nursing curriculum, rank in the upper 35% of their class, have a GPA of at least 3.0, and meet the expectation of academic integrity. 
  • Registered Nurse Students: Must have completed 12 credit hours at current school, completed half of the nursing curriculum, rank in the upper 35% of their class, have a GPA of at least 3.0, and meet the expectation of academic integrity. 
  • Graduate Students (Master’s and Doctorate): Must have completed one-quarter of the nursing curriculum, have a GPA of at least 3.5, and meet the expectation of academic integrity. 
  • Nurse Leaders: Must be legally recognized to practice nursing in their country, have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent in any field, and demonstrate achievement in nursing. 

How to Join

Membership in the Gamma Zeta Chapter is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship and to nurse leaders who have demonstrated achievement in the nursing profession.
