The UNCG School of Nursing is pleased to have received funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to offer the Federal Loan Forgiveness Program for Nursing to doctor of nursing practice (DNP) and PhD students who are – or plan to be – nurse educators in academic settings.

Why?

There is a serious, and increasing, nationwide shortage of doctorally prepared nursing faculty to meet the demand for educating future generations of nurses. The goal of the program is to encourage doctoral students to pursue careers in nursing education.

Specific Information

  • The loan covers 100% of tuition, fees, and books.
  • After graduation, 85% of the loan is forgiven if the student obtains a full-time educator position in academia within 12 months of graduating, and maintains an educator position for at least four years.
  • Funding cannot be used for general living expenses, health insurance, or costs covered by another funding source.

Who Is Eligible?

  • UNCG School of Nursing DNP or PhD students in good standing
  • Those DNP or PhD students who plan to pursue a full-time nurse faculty position upon graduation
  • U.S. citizens or a lawful resident of the U.S. and its territories
  • Have no judgement liens entered against them based on the default on a Federal debt, 28 U.S.C. 3201 (e)

*Priority is given to students who have already received Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) support and do not have funding from other sources.

How Does It Work?

  • Students must be enrolled for at least two consecutive semesters each academic year of loan support.
  • Students will sign a Letter of Commitment for the initial amount funded and updated loan amounts each semester. A Statement of Borrowers’ Rights and Responsibilities will also be required each year of NFLP support.
  • Students without prior graduate coursework in nursing education are expected to complete 6 credit hours in nursing education, a Board of Nursing Approved CE program, or pass the CNE exam prior to graduation.
  • Enrolled students are expected to participate in UNCG’s Future Faculty Program and the School of Nursing Curriculum Committee.
