Nursing Interest

Students must meet certain eligibility requirements to pursue the nursing major. For this reason, students cannot select the nursing major as incoming students, or change their major to nursing themselves. All students interested in pursuing the nursing major will be listed as Pre-Health with the School of Health and Human Sciences and tracked as a “Health Professions Exploration” student. Each student will be assigned to an advising center in either the School of Nursing or the School of Health and Human Sciences. The nursing major itself must be initiated by the School of Nursing Advising Center once students are formally admitted to the major during a competitive application process. More details about the process for advisor assignment for specific groups of students follows:

Due to the large number of incoming freshmen interested in pursuing the nursing major, students will either be assigned to an advisor in the School of Nursing or to an advisor in the Health and Human Sciences (HHS) Advising Center. Incoming freshmen who are initially assigned to the HHS Advising Center may request to have their advisor changed to a School of Nursing advisor after successful completion of 15 semester hours of coursework at UNCG with a GPA of at least 3.0. See process for “Continuing UNCG Students” above.

Incoming transfer and second-degree students must have a transfer GPA of 3.0 or greater across all institutions attended to be eligible to pursue the nursing major upon admission to the University.

Students with a transfer GPA of 3.0 or greater across all institutions attended should complete the “Request for Change of Major to Nursing” form and submit it to the School of Nursing Advising Center. Keep a copy for your records. Allow at least 2 weeks for the form to be processed.

Incoming transfer and second-degree students who are initially ineligible to pursue the nursing major may request to change their advisor to the School of Nursing Advising Center after successful completion of 15 semester hours of coursework at UNCG with a GPA of at least 3.0. See process for “Continuing UNCG Students” above.

Continuing UNCG students must earn and maintain a UNCG GPA of 3.0 or greater to pursue the major. Students with a UNCG GPA of 3.0 or greater who wish to change their advisor to the School of Nursing Advising Center should complete the “Request for Change of Advisor to School of Nursing” form and submit it to the School of Nursing Advising Center. Keep a copy for your records. Allow at least 2 weeks for the form to be processed.

Remaining Assigned to the School of Nursing Advising Center

Students pursuing the nursing major must earn and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher in order to remain assigned to the School of Nursing Advising Center. If the GPA falls below 3.0, the student’s major will be changed to Pre-Health or another major selected by the student.

Advice to Everyone Interested in the Nursing Major

Keep in mind that every year the School receives more applications to the upper division nursing major than can be accepted. Admission is highly competitive, and students need to demonstrate strong academic performance to have a high likelihood of being accepted into the upper division major. Meeting the minimum criteria to pursue nursing does not guarantee admission to the upper division nursing major. Students who find meeting the minimum criteria to be challenging are strongly encouraged to meet with their academic advisor to discuss their likelihood of acceptance into the major, and their academic plans in the event they are not admitted into the major.
