BSN as a Second Degree Information 2009 - 2010

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program typically takes three years to complete for students with a previous Bachelor’s Degree. The baccalaureate degree is made up of: General Education Core Requirements (GEC), which are waived for students with baccalaureate degrees from approved, accredited institutions; cognate requirements that are prerequisite for the upper level clinical nursing courses; School requirements; and free electives (if needed to total the second degree hours to 122 semester hours).

PREREQUISITES FOR UPPER LEVEL REQUIRED NURSING COURSES
Five courses (minimum) are prerequisites and part of the admission criteria for the upper level clinical nursing courses. They are NUR 210, NUR 220, BIO 271 (Anatomy), BIO 277 (Physiology), and BIO 280 (Microbiology). Additional information regarding these requirements is noted below.

CourseGrade RequiredPrerequisites
BIO 271 (Anatomy)C or betterBIO 111 (Principles of Biology I)
BIO 277 (Physiology) C or betterBIO 111 and High School Chemistry
BIO 280 (MicrobiologyC or betterBIO 271 or 277
NUR 210 (Fall semester only)B- or better 3.0 GPA, pre/co-req BIO 271 or 277
NUR 220 (Spring semester only) B- or better3.0 GPA, NUR 210

Statistics: All students must complete a statistics course (STA 108 or approved equivalent) prior to starting the 400-level Nursing courses.

As a general rule, students should not plan to complete criterion courses in the summer prior to the upper division. We cannot guarantee that any course will be offered in the summer and those that are offered normally have very limited enrollment. If one needs or chooses to complete courses in summer school, it is best to limit enrollment to one criterion course per session.

APPLICATION FOR THE UPPER LEVEL CLINICAL COMPONENT
Admission to the University does not guarantee acceptance into the nursing major. Admission to the Upper Division is extremely competitive as the number of applications typically exceeds the number of available spaces each year. Applications for the upper division are made in late fall or early spring prior to the fall semester in which you wish to begin the upper division. Applications are available November 1 and due back into the School of Nursing by February 1. Applicants are notified of the School’s decision regarding acceptance for the upper division in late March or early April. Application for admission is possible while students are still completing the prerequisite courses, but unconditional admission cannot be granted until admission criteria have been successfully completed.

Admission criteria for the upper division major are identified in the UNCG Bulletin. Minimum requirements include [1] an overall grade point average of 3.0; [2] a grade of “C” (2.0) or better is required in each of the following courses: BIO 271, BIO 277, BIO 280; [3] a grade of “B-“ (2.7) or better is required in both NUR 210 and NUR 220; and [4] no more than two of the above prerequisite courses may be repeated to attain the minimum grade identified in items 2 and 3 above; and [5] prerequisite courses may be repeated only one time. Due to the competitive nature of this program, successful applicants typically present much higher credentials for admission. Students may not enroll in nursing courses beyond the foundation level courses cited above without being admitted to the School.

The admissions committee looks at all post-secondary coursework completed when making their decisions. Applicants are required to submit a copy of the transcripts from all previous schools attended. It is highly recommended that students complete at least two of the required biology courses (BIO 271, 277, and/or 280) by the end of the fall semester. (See Sample Plan of Study below).

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS
Students must complete a minimum of 31 semester hours in residence at UNCG beyond requirements for the first degree by completing major and elective requirements.
