RN to BSN (Diploma Program) Degree Information 2009 - 2010

The BSN completion program for RN students has course offerings for both day and evening students. The length of time required to complete the program varies for each individual due to differences in educational backgrounds and the availability of course offerings. Upon admission to the University, RNs must provide the School of Nursing with evidence of graduation from a state board approved nursing program prior to enrolling in NUR 370 and/or NUR 371.

DEGREE REQUIRMENTS: The degree is made up of: General Education Core Requirements (GEC), GEC Markers, Nursing Cognate Requirements, 30 semester hours (s.h.) of credit earned by Special Examinations for nursing courses, 25 s.h. of required nursing courses, and free electives. The minimum hours required for the degree is 122 s.h of which 31 s.h. must be completed at UNCG.

I. General Education Core Requirements (GEC): Students must complete 36-37 s.h. to meet the following requirements:

  • GFA (Fine Arts, Example: MUS 241)
  • GLT (Literature, Example: ENG 201)
  • GPR (Philosophy, Religion, and Ethics, Example: PHI 111)
  • HFA (One additional course from GFA, GLT or GPR)
  • GHP (History, Example: WCV 101)
  • GMT (Math, met with STA 108)
  • GNS (Two Natural Sciences and One lab, Example: BIO 111)
  • GRD1 (Reasoning and Discourse, Required: ENG 101)
  • GRD (Reasoning and Discourse, Example: CST 105 or ENG 102)
  • GSB (Two Social and Behavioral Sciences, Example: PSY 121 and HDF 211)

II. Marker Requirements: Students must complete courses that have the following markers:

  • Writing Intensive Requirements (WI) – This is a UNCG requirement for all students. You must take two writing intensive courses, one in Nursing (NUR 370) and one non-Nursing class of your choice.
  • Speaking Intensive Requirements (SI) – This is a UNCG requirement for all students. You must take two speaking intensive courses, one in Nursing (NUR 472) and one non-Nursing class of your choice.
  • Global Perspectives Courses (GL and GN) – Students must complete 4 Global courses (GL), one of which must be Global Nonwestern (GN). Try to choose classes in other categories that are also GL or GN courses. (For example, MUS 241 is a GFA and GL) Although foreign language is not required for the Nursing Degree, up to two semesters of foreign language may be used to meet this requirement.

Choose Carefully! It is possible to complete all marker requirements without taking extra classes. Courses used to meet the GEC core category also fulfill the Marker Requirements if the course carries the indicated marker in the semester Schedule of Courses. For example, CST 105 (Introduction to Public Speaking) meets the GRD requirement, all sections are Speaking Intensive (SI) and some sections are also Writing Intensive (WI). That means it is possible to meet three requirements with one class!

III. Cognate Courses STA 108 (GMT) (pre/co-requisite for NUR 473) 3 s.h.

IV. Special Examinations 30 s.h. (maximum) Credit earned by special examinations is equated to NUR 210, 220, 310, 320, 340, 360 and 380.
