Goals

The School of Nursing is committed to excellence in accomplishing the following goals:

  1. Assist students to acquire a liberal, professional education through study of the humanities, arts, sciences, and the discipline of nursing.

  2. Prepare professional nurses to deliver comprehensive nursing care to people in a variety of settings, according to standards of clinical nursing practice.
  3. Conduct scholarly activities and research to advance knowledge in the discipline of nursing.
  4. Provide professional and public service to meet the needs of a global society.

Baccalaureate Nursing Program Goals

The baccalaureate program prepares graduates for the following:

  1. Practice professional nursing through the use of knowledge, critical thinking, inquiry, communication, and caring.
  2. Function independently and interdependently in the health care system while providing nursing care to individuals, families, groups, and communities.

Master's Nursing Program Goals

The master's program prepares graduates for the following:

  1. Perform in advanced practice nursing roles as clinicians, educators, or administrators, according to standards of practice.
  2. Assume leadership roles in promoting quality health care locally, regionally, and beyond.
  3. Advance the existing body of nursing knowledge through inquiry.

Doctoral Program Goals

The doctoral program prepares graduates for the following:

  1. Markedly increase the number of nurse scientists who will advance the discipline through scholarly inquiry.
  2. Produce leaders who will advance the nursing profession and promote optimal health for ethnic minorities, women, children, and older adults.
  3. Develop scholars who will meet the academic and healthcare industry needs for Nursing in North Carolina and the nation.
