MSN Outreach Program

GENERAL INFORMATION

The MSN Outreach Program offers a Nursing Education Concentration in collaboration with the Northwest Area Health Education Center (NWAHEC). It is a part-time program designed for the working BSN wishing to earn the MSN degree. Classes are held at the Northwest AHEC building adjacent to Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, NC on Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and are taught by UNCG faculty.

The 36 credit hour program is eight semesters in length. Students are admitted only at the start of each program offering, which is every 3 years and is contingent on funding. The next program is planned to begin in August 2014.

ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM

Students should submit the MSN Prospective Student Record form prior to applying to the University. Applicants may apply online at the Graduate School’s website http://www.uncg.edu/grs. Admission of qualified applicants for the Program is on a first-come, first-serve basis according to the date of admission to the University. To maintain program quality and meet student needs, class size is limited to 25.

UNCG ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited program.
  2. A minimum GPA of 3.0.
  3. Current unrestricted license as a registered nurse in NC or in state covered by multi-state nurse licensure compact.
  4. Satisfactory score on the GRE or MAT taken within five years.
  5. A minimum of one year of full-time clinical nursing experience.

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS

  1. Evidence of current liability insurance coverage.
  2. Competency in basic health assessment prior to NUR 651.
  3. Completion of undergraduate inferential statistics course prior to NUR 602.
  4. BLS certification prior to enrollment in NUR 651, NUR 652, and NUR 653.
  5. Completion of Parts A and B of the UNCG Immunization Form with the exception of the meningococcal vaccine.
  6. Criminal background check.
  7. Health insurance required for students enrolled in 6 or more credits/semester
  8. Other requirements needed to meet affiliating clinical agency requirements (i.e. drug screens and/or flu shots).

COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS

Students must have access to a computer with fast access and the following:

  • Operating system: XP or higher or MAC OS 10 or higher
  • Microsoft Office Suite 2003 or later
  • Foxfire (preferred) or Internet Explorer
  • Adobe Acrobat

PROGRAM COSTS

Tuition & Fees: Tuition: NC Resident: $198* per credit; Non-NC Resident: $761* per credit; $6.00 registration fee.

Books & computer access: cost varies.

Additional costs: Liability insurance purchased through the School of Nursing Group Policy prior to NUR 651, $38*. *These costs, current as of 7/10, are subject to change by the NC General Assembly.
