MSN Outreach Program
GENERAL INFORMATION
The MSN Outreach Program offers a Nursing Education Concentration in collaboration with the Northwest Area Health Education Center (NWAHEC). It is a part-time program designed for the working BSN wishing to earn the MSN degree. Classes are held at the Northwest AHEC building adjacent to Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, NC on Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and are taught by UNCG faculty.
The 36 credit hour program is eight semesters in length. Students are admitted only at the start of each program offering, which is every 3 years and is contingent on funding. The next program is planned to begin in August 2011.
ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM
Admission to the program is on a first-come first-served basis according to the date of submission of a MSN Prospective Student Record form. Students must also be admitted to the Graduate School at UNCG prior to starting the program. Applications can be downloaded from the Graduate School’s website or by calling 336-334-5596. To maintain program quality and meet student needs, class size is limited to 20. Should the need arise; a waiting list will be created. Once admitted, all details are handled by correspondence or at the Hickory site.
UNCG ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited program.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Satisfactory score on the GRE or MAT taken within five years.
- A minimum of one year of full-time clinical nursing experience.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
- Current unrestricted license as registered nurse in North Carolina or in state covered by multi-state nurse licensure compact.
- Completion of inferential statistics course prior to enrollment in NUR 601.
- Competency in basic health assessment prior to NUR 651.
- Completion of Parts A & B of the UNCG Immunization Form with the exception of the meningococcal vaccine.
- Current CPR certification and immunizations prior to NUR651, NUR652, and NUR653.

The Graduate School expects students earning a masters degree to complete coursework within a 5-year time limit. Exceptions are handled on an individual basis. Courses will combine independent learning activities, web-based activities, and traditional instructional methods.

Tuition & Fees:
Tuition: NC Resident: $158* per credit; Non-NC Resident: $711* per credit.
Books & computer access: cost varies.
Additional costs: Liability insurance purchased through the School of Nursing Group Policy prior to NUR 651, $38*.
